Daniel R. R.Bradford
I am a public health researcher at the University of Glasgow, completing a PhD on child health. My work is about health inequalities and, in particular, health inequities, which are differences in health that are avoidable and unfair. I also work part-time as a support worker with people who have learning disabilities. I came to public health from engineering and psychology, and I have always been interested in how things work, and in how that understanding can support people who are disadvantaged.
Health inequalities and child health.
My PhD uses linked NHS Scotland data to look at the health of young children in care and not in care. Other work covers deprivation measures, excess mortality, and sleep and mental health in students. I also work on evidence synthesis.
Reviews, health data and surveys.
I have worked on systematic and scoping reviews, on large linked administrative health datasets, and on survey data. I try to be pragmatic, so I learn whichever methods the question needs and use them.

Quite a range.
I started out as an aerodynamicist at the Aircraft Research Association, then moved into psychology, where I researched sleep, suicide and student mental health at the University of Glasgow, and then into public health. Since 2015 I have also worked as a support worker with people who have learning disabilities, and I still do so part-time.
I currently chair the UK & Ireland Public Health Science Conference, which has been an incredible opportunity to support some fantastic, talented public health practitioners and researchers. I have also co-supervised an MPH dissertation. My PhD studentship was competitively awarded by the MRC and the Chief Scientist Office, and I hold a postgraduate excellence scholarship and the Paul Shoda Prize from my engineering degree.
Outside work I am a competitive runner with Shettleston Harriers, racing the 1500m in the summer and the 10k the rest of the year. I also go to a lot of live music and DJ, none of which is relevant to a job application.
